EMULSIFYING WAX

EMULSIFYING WAX

Emulsifying wax is an ideal medium for the blending of fine creams, lotions and other fluid cosmetics which contains oil and water.
Its ability to bind oil and water in perfect union is unparalleled, and today it remains the most ubiquitous substance in a cosmetic manufacturers formulary. We all know the frustration to be found when the water and oil in our creations separate, and we now have Emulsifying wax to help rid us of this persistent problem.
It will assist users in improving the consistency and texture of their final product without leaving a greasy film on the outer skin after application. Acts a mild stabilizer and thickener which is ultimately dependent on the amount added to your recipe.
A general guideline for use in cosmetics runs between 3-5%, and this material is suitable for most skin types as allergic reaction and skin sensitivities have rarely been recorded. Because of its heavily manufactured nature, and alcohol content, this material cannot be considered a benign "natural additive".

SHELLAC

Shellac is a resin secreted by the female lac bug, on trees in the forests of India and Thailand. It is processed and sold as dry flakes , which are dissolved in ethyl alcohol to make liquid shellac, which is used as a brush-on colorant, food glaze and wood finish. Shellac functions as a tough all-natural primer, sanding sealant, tannin-blocker, odour-blocker, stain, and high-gloss varnish. Shellac was once used in electrical applications as it possesses good insulation qualities and it seals out moisture. Phonograph (gramophone) records were also made of it during the pre-1950s, 78-rpm recording era.

Shellac is one of the few historically appropriate finishes (including casein paint, spar varnishes, boiled linseed oil and lacquer) for early 20th-century hardwood floors, and wooden wall and ceiling paneling.

From the time it replaced oil and wax finishes in the 19th century, shellac was one of the dominant wood finishes in the western world until it was replaced by nitrocellulose lacquer in the 1920s and 1930s.

Gum copal (GC) is a natural resinous material of plant Bursera bipinnata (family Burseraceae). It has been used as a raw material for varnish because it produces glossy films with good weather protection properties. It has been used as pigment binder in varnishes due to the excellent binding properties. It has been mainly used as an emulsifier and stabilizer for the production of colour, paints, printing inks, aromatic emulsions and meat preservative. Interestingly, GC was also used as medicine for several different ailments such as in the treatment of burns, headache, nosebleed, fever, stomachache, and in the preparation of dental products and as remedy for loose teeth and dysentery.

MICROCRYSTALLINE WAX

Microcrystalline waxes are a type of wax produced by de-oiling petrolatum, as part of the petroleum refining process. Microcrystalline waxes are derived from the refining of the heavy distillates from lubricant oil production. This by product then must be de-oiled at a wax refinery. Depending on the end use and desired specification, the product then may have its odor removed and color removed.

Microcrystalline wax is often used in industries such as the tire and rubber, candles, adhesives, corrugated board, cosmetics, castings, and a host of others. Refineries may also utlize blending facilities to combine paraffin and microcrystalline waxes. Microcrystalline wax is also a key component in the manufacture of petrolatum.

Investment casting is an ancient industrial technique which is also called lost-wax casting, one of the oldest known metal-forming techniques. From over 5,000 years ago, when beeswax formed the patterns, to today's high-tech. waxes, such as refractory materials and specialist alloys, the castings allow the manufacture of components with accuracy, versatility, repeatability, and integrity in different types of metals and high performance alloys. Lost foam casting is a recent form of investment casting that eliminates several steps in the process.

GUM DAMAR

Dammar gum, or damar gum, is obtained from the Dipterocarpaceae family of trees in India and East Asia, principally those of thegenera Shorea, Balanocarpus or Hopea. Most is produced by tapping trees; however, some is collected in fossilized form from the ground. The gum varies in colour from clear to pale yellow, while the fossilized form is grey-brown. Dammar gum is a triterpenoid resin, containing a large number of triterpenes and their oxidation products. Many of them are low molecular weight compounds (dammarane, dammarenolic acid, oleanane, oleanonic acid, etc.), but dammar also contains a polymeric fraction, composed of polycadinene.

It is used in foods, as a clouding or glazing agent, and in incense, varnish, and other products. Dammar varnish, made from dammar gum mixed with turpentine, was introduced as a picture varnish in 1826. is commonly used in oil painting, both during the painting process and after the painting is finished.
